This paper aims to offer an image of Nietzsche as a reader of Schopenhauer, putting aside some fundamental issues, such as the influence of Wagner and the critique of his former master in his late philosophy. Trying to isolate these aspects, I will take Nietzsche as one of the most important reader of Schopenhauer. His deep veneration does not exclude relentless criticism and his relentless criticism does not exclude his deep veneration of Schopenhauer.

Linguists (and philosophers of language) have long disagreed about the ontology of language, and thus about the proper subject matter of their disciplines. A close examination of the leading arguments in the debates shows that while positive arguments that language is x tend to be sound, negative arguments that language is not x generally fail. This implies that we should be pluralists about the metaphysical status of language and the subject matter of linguistics and the philosophy of language. A pluralist (...) ontology of language, however, involves pitfalls for research on language, and to avoid this pitfalls researchers should temper the pluralist attitude with two strictures. First, pluralism about the ontology of language precludes agnosticism about the ontology of language. Second, pluralism should not lead to isolated research programs. (shrink)

Recent work in the philosophy of biology has attempted to clarify and defend the use of the biodiversity concept in conservation science. I argue against these views, and give reasons to think that the biodiversity concept is a poor fit for the role we want it to play in conservation biology on both empirical and conceptual grounds. Against pluralists, who hold that biodiversity consists of distinct but correlated properties of natural systems, I argue that the supposed correlations between these properties (...) are not tight enough to warrant treating and measuring them as a bundle. I additionally argue that deflationary theories of biodiversity don’t go far enough, since a large proportion of what we value in the environment falls outside bounds of what could reasonably be called “diversity”. I suggest that in current scientific practice biodiversity is generally an unnecessary placeholder for biological value of all sorts, and that we are better off eliminating it from conservation biology, or at least drastically reducing its role. This paper focuses attention on the stakeholder attribute of legitimacy. Drawing upon institutional and stakeholder theories, I develop a framework of stakeholder legitimacy based on its three aspects—legitimacy of the stakeholder as an entity, legitimacy of the stakeholder’s claim, and legitimacy of the stakeholder’s behavior. I assume that stakeholder legitimacy is socially constructed by management and that each of its three aspects exists in degree in the manager’s perception. I discuss how these aspects interact and change over time, and propose (...) an agenda for future research on stakeholder legitimacy. (shrink)

Der Beitrag untersucht die geschichtliche Entwicklung in ehemaligen Kolonialstaaten nach dem Rückzug der Kolonialmächte. Er unternimmt diese Untersuchung im Ausgang von Hegels Begriff der Sittlichkeit. Mittels dieses Konzepts entwickelt der Autor ein Modell des historischen Prozesses, der durch den Widerstreit zwischen den Ansprüchen der einzelnen Gemeinschaften und denen des Nationalstaats bestimmt ist. Anschließend prüft er dieses Modell unter Rückgriff auf tatsächliche Entwicklungen, etwa in Südamerika.

As diferentes etnias produzem formas simbólicas, uma destas formas é através das imagens que a palavra enuncia, sendo assim, podemos afirmar que ao entrar em campo para estudar sobre etnicidades, o que os pesquisadores/as autores/as fazem é buscar entender quais formas simbólicas permeiam os universos estudados. Para pensar acerca desses universos é que tomo simbolismos étnicos enunciados pelas imagens que a palavra Legados Africanos carrega. A amplitude do trato com a categoria analítica legado africano pode se mostrar nas diversas obras (...) de diferentes autores e autoras, estudiosos das etnias africanas no Brasil, seja nas dimensões da cultura, da religião, das questões raciais negras, da linguística e outras. Mas aqui, o propósito é tomar as produções monográficas escritas por alunas e alunos, os quais orientei no curso de Pós-Graduação Lato Sensu em Antropologia com Ênfase em Culturas Afro-brasileiras para entender esses universos simbólicos. Neste sentido que, durante as orientações estava a lhes alertar que um curso de Antropologia com Ênfase em Culturas Afro-brasileiras, não poderia desprezar a categoria central de análise e interpretação que é legado africano no Brasil, salvo se, e somente se, a metodologia tratasse do objeto numa abordagem reducionista que excluísse, negasse e silenciasse as reminiscências africanas. As produções elaboradas por esses discentes nos indicou que os simbolismos presentes na palavra legados africanos enunciam que não são vistos como saberes de pertencimento étnico e sim como crenças. Pretende-se oferecer algumas reflexões sobre os conceitos de cultura, formação e educação em Schopenhauer tendo como ensejo o centésimo quinquagésimo aniversário da terceira Consideração Extemporânea de Friedrich Nietzsche, intitulada “Schopenhauer como Educador” (1874). Não pretendemos, nesse momento, tomar em consideração a filosofia de Nietzsche e o lugar que nela desempenha o referido texto em sua filosofia juvenil ou madura. Trata-se de considerar as contribuições que a filosofia de Schopenhauer oferece para a temática abordada no texto de Nietzsche.

I address the problem of how Socrates can claim his elenchus, or refutation, establishes the falsehood of his interlocutor's initial claim, when all it seems to do is show that the initial claim is inconsistent with other beliefs that the interlocutor expresses in the argument. ;To address this problem, I first uncover its fundamentals, including its central issue and main assumptions. This is an epistemological problem, the central issue of which is how Socrates thinks he and the interlocutor are justified (...) in thinking that the auxiliary premises in his elenctic arguments are true. If they have the requisite justification for the auxiliary premises, then they have the requisite justification that the interlocutor's initial claim is false. Second, I argue that the main assumptions of the problem are justified and thereby argue that there is a legitimate problem that needs to be solved. Third, I argue that this problem has not been adequately solved. Fourth, I argue for my own original solution. ;My solution is that in cases within the scope of the problem, Socrates and the interlocutor agree to the auxiliary premises under two important conditions: they both aim to acquire truth and avoid error,1 and they both say what they really think. When they agree under these conditions, Socrates thinks they secure from each other corroborative agreement: they both check with each other that their judgements about that to which they agree have objectivity. Socrates' fundamental epistemic intuition is that agreement under these conditions amounts to something regarding justification for that upon which they agree; we can't expect to make any philosophical progress at all unless we thought that our agreements under these conditions stood for something. ;This solves the problem because Socrates and the interlocutor disagree about the initial claim, but they have corroborative agreement to the auxiliary premises, which gives both Socrates and the interlocutor the requisite justification for them. Since the auxiliary premises imply the negation of the initial claim, both Socrates and the interlocutor can justifiably think that the elenctic argument establishes the falsehood of the initial claim. ;1This condition is similar to one proposed by Keith Lehrer , 130), as are other insights that provided inspiration for the solution presented here. Mediante el análisis de determinados pasajes del capítulo VI de la Fenomenología del espíritu, este trabajo demuestra cómo se vale Hegel de la tragedia griega para diseñar un modelo del desarrollo conflictivo de las relaciones entre sociedad y Estado. El hilo conductor de la lectura es el concepto de inversión (Verkehrung), que aparece estrechamente vinculado al de acción (Handlung). El estudio muestra, en conclusión, que la reducción de esta comprensión trágica de la eticidad a los términos del conflicto entre sociedad (...) civil y Estado de la Filosofía del derecho implica pérdidas grandes, pero no irrecuperables. In game-theoretic signaling models, evolution tends to favor perfectly precise signaling systems, but in the natural world communication is almost always imprecise. I argue that standard explanations for this discrepancy are only partially sufficient, and I show that communication is often ambiguous because signal senders take advantage of context sensitivity. As evidence, I make two additions to the signaling model: a cost for more complex signaling strategies and the ability to combine information in signals with independent information. Analysis and simulation (...) of the altered model shows that it leads to the predicted outcome of evolution favoring ambiguous signaling. (shrink)

Data which constitute satisfactory evidence in other contexts are sometimes not treated as valid evidence in the context of scientic conrmation. I give a justicatory explanation of this fact, appealing to the incentives, biases, and social situatedness of scientists.

In this paper we study interpretations and equivalences of propositional deductive systems by using a quantale-theoretic approach introduced by Galatos and Tsinakis. Our aim is to provide a general order-theoretic framework which is able to describe and characterize both strong and weak forms of interpretations among propositional deductive systems also in the cases where the systems have different underlying languages.

Objective: Mindfulness disposition is associated with various psychological factors and prevent emotional distress in chronic diseases. In the present study, we analyzed the key role of mindfulness dispositions in protecting the individual against psychological distress consequent to COVID-19 social distancing and quarantining. Methods: An online survey was launched on March 13, 2020, with 6,412 responses by April 6, 2020. Socio-demographic information, exposure to the pandemic, and quarantining were assessed together with psychological distress and mindfulness disposition. Multivariate linear regression analysis was (...) performed to study the influence of predictive factors on psychological distress and quality of life in Italian responders during the early days of lockdown. Pearson correlations were calculated to study the relations between mindfulness and psychiatric symptoms. Results: Multivariate linear regression run on socio-demographics, COVID-19-related variables, and mindfulness disposition as moderators of overall psychological distress showed that mindfulness was the best predictor of psychological distress (β = -0.504; p =.000). High negative correlations were found between mindfulness disposition and overall Global Severity Index (r = -.637; p =.000), while moderate to high associations were found between mindfulness and all SCL-90 sub-scales. Discussion: Findings showed that high dispositional mindfulness enhances well-being and helps in dealing with stressful situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Mindfulness-based mental training could represent an effective intervention to stem the post-traumatic psychopathological beginnings and preventing the onset of chronic mental disorders. (shrink)

Todas as dimensões do ensino de geografia contribuem para a construção de referenciais de leitura do mundo, conferem poder a indivíduos e grupos em suas interações e relações, do mesmo modo que os posiciona, tanto do ponto de vista geográfico quanto social. A Geografia tem, portanto, na perspectiva de Santos (2009), relação direta com a constituição da ideia de raça e com a instauração de formas de relações raciais. Neste artigo tem-se como objetivo identificar como as dimensões das colonialidades, ou (...) seja, a colonialidade o poder, do saber e do ser se reproduzem do ensino de Geografia na interface com as relações étnico-raciais e, ao mesmo tempo, analisar como as epistemes decoloniais e a perspectiva de educação antirracista, em conformidade com a lei 10.639/2003, interpelam os processos de racialização e produção do conhecimento acerca das relações étnico-raciais no ensino de Geografia. As religiões de matriz africana foram e ainda são intensamente estudadas buscando compreender sobre o seu funcionamento, as relações construídas entre os fiéis, assim como entre os fiéis e as entidades. Essa sociedade, enquanto sociedade não-europeia, é estudada com base nos conhecimentos eurocêntricos, o que torna possível compreender as formas de abordagem do conhecimento universal sobre o Candomblé, colocando assim, o conhecimento Europeu como nativo. Dessa forma, sigo o caminho proposto pela antropóloga Marimba Ani, para pensar a roça de Candomblé (...) e a herança africana, a partir das epistemologias oriundas do terreiro. Utilizo a poesia do ogan Wesley Correia, os pensadores negros em diáspora e os africanos enquanto uma encruzilhada de caminhos possíveis a ser construído em diálogo com o romance “O mundo se despedaça”, de Chinua Achebe para enriquecer a discussão de visão-de-mundo e produção de sentido. Este artigo tem como objetivo delinear algumas ideias contemporâneas sobre o conceito de etnografia, discutindo questões teóricas e descrevendo processos metodológicos. Apresenta, também, algumas pesquisas que se utilizam desse campo de estudo como pressupostos teóricos de análise.

In his Cahiers , Valéry says that writing two of his major dialogues, Eupalinos and L’âme et la danse , was an antidote to his ravaging mood: literature and spirituality are the remedy generated by a necessary and not eliminable evil, particularly the one that shows itself as ‘rage’ in love. The essay investigates thoroughly this contradictory logic and focuses on the problem of sensitiveness in Valéry’s work, pointing out a twofold presence of the ‘body’. Preserving these two presences, the (...) writing incessantly tries to make up “une fureur intelligente et expérimentale” and to give a new form, without deleting it, to sensitiveness’ acute pain. A relação entre os quatro livros de O mundo como Vontade e Representação, isto é, entre as quatro partes da filosofia de Schopenhauer, tem sido uma das questões mais controversas da pesquisa sobre seu pensamento. Saber se a ética é de fato mais importante que a estética, ou se a metafísica deve ser subordinada à teoria do conhecimento, são questões que têm ocupado frequentemente os intérpretes do filósofo. Há diversas interpretações rivais sobre o modo como a filosofia de Schopenhauer deve (...) ser lida, se como um sistema arquitetônico e linear, ou orgânico e sem subordinação de uma parte à outra, por exemplo. As afirmações do próprio autor sobre o estatuto de sua filosofia nem sempre são suficientes para dirimir as controvérsias. No presente artigo, procurarei reconstruir algumas dessas leituras e propor uma interpretação própria para o que entendo ser o sistema filosófico de Schopenhauer. (shrink)
